[information]

NAME No formal name given
ALIAS: Often uses Barnaby or variants thereof.
AGE: Adult
GENDER: Leans heavily male but technically agender/apathetic. (He's a sentient location, gender is kind of an afterthought for him.).
SEXUALITY Pansexual
SPECIES:: Demon-adjacent (technically a portion of Hell itself made flesh)
IF we're talking the eldritch variant, he's not aligned to much of anything other than liminal spaces but both versions have him bound to a human shell in some way.
HEIGHT: 6'2"
HAIR: Usually dark and worn relatively short. Sometimes it can get long if he's thinking about it, but letting it grow isn't natural for him.
EYES: Grey

ON FIRST GLANCE / CURRENT STATE

Most of the time, he looks a little disheveled, hesitant, and like he hasn't had a good meal in about three days. Add this to the fact that he's usually not too sure how to carry himself, or what to do with his hands, it's generally assumed that he has some kind of anxiety issue.

His clothes often look well worn, if not flat out fraying, and are often in dark shades though not usually all solid black. Long sleeved shirts which tend toward medium/dark shades of blue/grey, and charcoal grey or black pants are often his style of choice.

He's a wanderer, not by choice but by fear. He doesn't know how to get back to where he was from, be that Hell itself or the pocket dimension that he was splintered from in the weird eldritch AU. Due to being captured and imprisoned for a time on Earth, he's also hesitant to stay anywhere for too long, just in is found again. .

He feels most comfortable in or near abandoned buildings and often uses them as places to take shelter in for a night or two, as well as bus terminals and all night cafes. If there's one nearby, he'll also go toward any library or bookstore he can spend time in until someone asks him to leave.

PERSONALITY

Often skittish, he can be easy to startle or scare, despite also being very aware of what's around him. Half the time, he looks as if he's about to take off running but he does his best to try and appear calm and easygoing, or at the very least apathetic to what's around him.

Once he does warm up, he's actually rather kind and friendly, especially to people who also look like they've hit on rough times. While he usually doesn't have much to offer, if he's aware someone needs something, he does what he can to assist.

Books, and story in general, are things he loves more than just about anything. Stories soothe his mind and bring him a kind of peace that nothing else can. He'll mutter random passages of random books to himself as a form of self soothing, and will listen to almost anyone if they have a tale to tell. The same holds true if you're willing to willing to read out loud. Live theatre can also draw him in, and even TV or movies can capture his attention, though not quite as easily.

He also carries a deep fondness for most string instruments and can actually play a variety of of styles on violin.

ABILITIES

- Shapeshifting
He can technically take on the shape of anyone or anything that he's seen before, though it's a skill he hardly ever uses. The current face he wears is not the one he started with.

- Misdirection and Illusion
Can make those around him both see/hear/feel things that are not there, as well as not observe things that are actually happening or interacting with that person.

- Place and Object Communication
He can talk with and understand the locations he finds himself in. Anywhere from apartment buildings to open fields, he can communicate with all of it. This also holds true for smaller objects but he's far less skilled at talking with a table than he is with a sidewalk or a city.

- Fire Manipulation
Funny enough, not something that came naturally but a skill he taught himself long before he started exploring. It was mostly out of curiosity and to see what he could do, and he only has enough skill to conjure up fire on par with your average cigarette lighter.

- Fear, Desire, and Shame
While he isn't a mind reader exactly, he can "taste" certain things about a person. Their fears, wants/needs, and the things they hold shame over are the main things, though he often can tell if someone is human or not, or if they happen to have been touched by the supernatural in some way

HISTORY

Note: The Eldritch AU will get it's own history section at some point but, for the most part, this gives you an idea of what you're working with here.

His very existence is an odd thing and he's never sure how he feels about it.

Lucifer brought him into consciousness, offering his own blood and bone to the land of Hell itself. Along with it, he spoke to the land, telling it stories, and honoring it in what ways were available to him. All of this was enough to grant him what he wanted, someone who he could help find their own way, without the burden of having fallen from Heaven, or have been banished to him as punishment.

And then there he was, something that no one had seen before. Not a demon, not an angel, or even anything human. The strange embodiment of Hell, wrapped up in a childish curiosity and glee, ready to see what was waiting beyond the confines of the place he knew.

Neither Lucifer or his new charge had intended to fall into a parent and child relationship exactly, but it somehow evolved into one all the same. Once Lucifer himself had realized what had happened, he did what he thought was best and chose to not to give his "child" a name.

Names had too much power for him to want to give someone who didn't have one, that kind of burden. He had seen firsthand how the power of a name can be used against someone and he would not do this to someone that had managed to go without one.

But even without the power of a name to use, terrible things can still happen to a person.

No one said he couldn't go between home and Earth, so he often bounced between the two realms. He's stay away for a few days at a time, exploring here and there, and then find his way back through Hell's gates. While he had been a part of the land, the land didn't keep him from leaving either.

One day though, he couldn't find his way back. All the cracks in the world, and hidden doorways, had been kept from him, though he didn't know why. Soon after that, he was claimed a small, but powerful group who, while not knowing what exactly he was, had enough abilities to see he _had_ travelled from Hell to the mortal world.

They kept him from the mid 1950s through the early 21st century. The only reason he'd found his way free had nothing to do with good planning, or a rescue mission, but rather some good luck and carelessness on the part of those who kept him.

A number of things took place while he remained with the group, all of which left their marks in one way or another. Small things, such as regular force-feeding and not allowing him to see much of anything beyond a very harsh artificial light, to later binding him into a single shape and skin while cutting off any sense he could have used to communicate with the place that they were holding him.

Other things had also taken place, but he honestly doesn't recall much more and has no desire to go exploring his own memories.

Upon finding his freedom, he was also confronted with the fact that his ability to return home was still out of reach. Between everything that had happened and the backlash of what he'd experienced, he found himself unsure if he wasn't actually supposed to find his way back after all.
